6th Grade Home Room
Hello to all my incoming students and their families. I am thrilled to be back for my tenth year at Little Flower School. This will be my fortieth year teaching in the Catholic schools. I first began my teaching career at St. Joseph School in Long Beach, California. I spent two years teaching middle school for the Sisters of St. Louis. I then moved to St. Mel's School in Woodland Hills, California. I taught middle school there for five years before starting my family and, subsequently moving to Reno, Nevada. In 1983, I began teaching at Our Lady of the Snows School, teaching middle school language arts, history, and religion. I spent ten years there as a middle school teacher and then was hired as the principal. I led the school as their principal for twelve years and then decided to retire. HA, HA. My retirement lasted only one year and, in 2005, I came to Little Flower. I have a long history at Little Flower because my children both spent eight years here. I LOVE LITTLE FLOWER AND I LOVE MY STUDENTS. I LOVE TEACHING. IT IS WHAT KEEPS ME ALIVE.

The Story of the Church in Art
Students will study the history of the Catholic Church by looking at the work of the masters. Students will, then, have an opportunity to create their own work of art by imitating the masters or creating their own vision of the works of art studied. Students will have the opportunity to work with different media, including charcoal, oil pastels, crayons, colored pencils, tempera paint, and water colors. This will be a hands-on class. Grades will simply be PASS OR FAIL. It will be a fun activity for those students who love art.

6th Grade Religion
Students will study the Old Testament stories with a focus on the four pillars of the Catholic Catechism---What Catholics Believe, How Catholics Worship, How Catholics Live, and How Catholics Pray. Scripture study and prayer will always be a part of class. Grades will be based on the following: Classwork-20%, Homework-20%, Quizzes-25%, Tests-35%
6th Grade Honors Language Arts
Students will study English grammar in depth. They will be required to identify, analyze, and use English grammar effectively. A separate focus will be on vocabulary. Students will explore and apply all aspects of vocabulary skills including parts of speech, pronunciation, synonyms, antonyms, word usage, prefixes, suffixes, roots and origins of words. Writing will also be an integral part of language arts study. Students will study and practice the four types of writing ( narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive). Students will use the six traits of writing ( ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation) to complete formal essays for each of the four types of writing. Grades will be based on the following: Homework-grammar and vocabulary--10%, Quizzes for grammar-15%, Tests-grammar and vocabulary-25%, Writing-15%. IT WILL BE A BUSY YEAR.
